Vandals do more than $42,000 damage
at Rockwood Conservation Area
(Rockwood, Ont) Winter is normally a quiet time around Rockwood Conservation Area. Park staff spends the time between November and April making improvements to the park and getting ready for the next season.
But the past winter, Park Superintendent Brad Dixon has had to spend a lot of his time dealing with vandalism that has, so far, amounted to more than $42,000 in damage to park facilities.
The most recent incident - and the most expensive - was on Sunday evening, when two serviced outhouses were burned to the ground, a vending machine was broken into, the concrete ramp to the beach was damaged, a stop sign removed and a drinking water stand destroyed. The total damage was at least $36,000, most of it involving the loss of the two outhouses.
Last week, a wooden bridge in the old mill ruins was set on fire. In earlier incidents, vandals attempted to set a fire in a new shower house, broke into the mini-putt building, spray painted graffiti on a wall and damaged signs and doors. A Bell Canada payphone was smashed twice, and has now been removed permanently from the park.
Police are asking anyone who has any information that might assist us in solving these crimes to contact the Guelph Office of the County of Wellington O.P.P. at (519) 822-7250 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

BE CAREFUL OF PAVING SCAMS
The County of Wellington O.P.P. wishes to warn residents of Wellington
County to be careful of paving scams.
Often, contractors offer to pave driveways at a reduced price, because they
have a small amount of asphault left over from a nearby job. They approach
homeowners and solicit their business but no contract is signed.
When the job is complete, the price is higher than expected and the
homeowner is threatened with legal action if they do not pay.
Here are some tips that may help to prevent you from becoming a victim:
1. Get a written estimate before you agree to have any work
completed.
2. Get several estimates to ensure that the price is reasonable
for the work requested.
3. Call you local Better Business Bureau and see what the
reputation of your contractor is. If you can't, check with his previous
customers to see the quality of his/her work and prices charged.
4. Before you pay, make sure that the work completed is what
you requested.
5. If you are overcharged, do not pay the contractor, call the
Police immediately and report the incident.

CALL THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY TO REPORT CRIMES
If you see a crime that is taking place or suspicious activity, you need to
call the Police immediately and report the incident.
Often people witness a crime in progress or suspicious activity and they
feel they don't want to bother the Police because it's late at night so they
wait until the next day to report it. This makes it difficult for the Police
to catch the person(s) responsible and to prevent similar types of crimes
from occurring to your neighbours.
Here are some helpful hints that will assist the Police in their
investigation:
1. Report all crimes immediately. If the crime is in progress,
dial 9-1-1.
2. Do not warn the suspect(s) that you have spotted them.
3. Do not try to apprehend the suspect(s) yourself. This may be
dangerous, especially if the suspect(s) is armed. Call the Police and let
them arrest the suspect(s). They are equipped to make arrests.
4. If you can, try to record the licence numbers of any
vehicles that may be involved. If not, try to get a description of the
vehicle (make, model, colour, number of doors, any writing or marks on the
vehicle that help to identify it).
5. Try to write down a description of the suspect(s) involved
(colour, sex, age, height, weight, build, hair colour/style/length, eyes,
glasses, facial hair, tattoos, and clothing).
6. If the suspect(s) leave before Police arrive, try to
determine their direction of travel.
7. When you call the Police, make sure you confirm your address
with the 9-1-1 operators before you hang up. Sometimes, the 9-1-1 listings
are not up to date, especially if you have recently moved to a new address.
Try to report any suspicious activity immediately. People generally have
good instincts and when they see something that doesn't look right, they are
generally correct. Often these tips help the Police catch someone before
they commit the crime.
Remember, if you have information that may assist the Police in solving any
crime, please contact your local O.P.P. detachment or Crimestoppers at
1-800-222-TIPS.

BEWARE OF INTERNET SCAM
The County of Wellington O.P.P. wishes to warn local residents not to become
a victim of a current Internet e-mail scam targeting "Citibank" cardholders.
This fraudulent scheme is commonly referred to as the "Fishing Scam". A
batch of random e-mails are sent out to people on the Internet requesting
bank card information and the cardholder's PIN number. It sounds authentic
and they try to convince you that they are doing it for your own protection,
but that is not true.
The perpetrator holds out this lure, just like in fishing, and hopes someone
will take the bait and respond with the information that they requested.
Then they use that information to clean out your account.
Never Respond to This Type of E-mail!
