Report on the public information evening presented by the County of Wellington Solid Waste Services.

On October 30, 2001 a public information evening was held at the Community Centre to inform Puslinch residents about the County's plans for the Puslinch landfill site.

The meeting was attended by about fifty Puslinchers, and compared to the very lively last meeting, held in June, this one was quite low key.

While a great deal of information was presented, two main points emerged that will affect the dump and how it is used.

The county will operate only two landfill sites, one in the north and one in the south, closing or mothballing the others. The Puslinch site will be the one in the south, meaning that garbage from outside the Township will be brought in. The reasoning was explained in terms of economics--it is much more cost effective to operate two landfill sites, rather than the current seven sites. While I don't like the idea of bringing garbage in from outside the township, this does seem to make sense.

The other main point is that starting in January 2002 additional items will be accepted for recycling. These include:

  • #2 plastic
  • boxboard
  • egg cartons
  • fine paper
  • aluminum foil/plates
Also starting in January curbside collection service will go to $1.75 per bag. Special user pay bags will have to be purchased.
